Dynamic Discs Sergeant Review: Overstable Distance Driver for Controlled Power

Updated: June 2026 · by Adam Bell · affiliate links

The Dynamic Discs Sergeant (11/4/0/3) is an overstable distance driver that sits between the Speed 7-9 fairway drivers and the Speed 12-13 maximum-distance drivers. Its 0 Turn and Fade 3 give it very similar overstability to the Innova Firebird, but at Speed 11 it carries that stability into distance driver territory. The result is a disc useful for headwind drives, forehand distance shots, and situations where you need the reliability of an overstable disc with real distance driver speed behind it. Dynamic Discs describes it as "a faster Getaway or a slower Raider."

Dynamic Discs Sergeant - Quick Specs

  • Flight Numbers 11 / 4 / 0 / 3 (Speed / Glide / Turn / Fade)
  • Disc Type Distance Driver (Overstable)
  • Stability Overstable
  • Weight Range 155g-176g (most players throw 165-174g)
  • Plastics Lucid, Lucid Air, Fuzion, Fuzion X, Prime, Hybrid
  • Approx. Price $15-22 depending on plastic
  • Best For Intermediate to advanced; headwinds, forehand distance, reliable hard-fading drives

Who Should Throw the Sergeant?

  • Beginners: Not recommended. The 0 Turn and Fade 3 at Speed 11 will fade out fast for players without developed arm speed. Start with understable discs first.
  • Intermediate players (280-380 feet): The Sergeant works as a headwind driver and forehand distance disc. When your neutral drivers flip in headwinds, the Sergeant holds its line. When your forehand throws need more distance than the Teebird or Firebird provide, the Sergeant's Speed 11 covers more ground while keeping the overstable character.
  • Advanced players: Carries the Sergeant as an overstable distance driver - the "fast Firebird" for situations that need overstability at distance driver speed. Useful for long headwind bombs, big skip shots, and forehand drives past 350 feet.

How the Dynamic Discs Sergeant Flies

The Sergeant's 0 Turn and Fade 3 describe a disc that goes straight and finishes hard left, reliably, every time. At Speed 11, it carries enough energy to be a real distance driver while maintaining that overstable character. Thrown flat at proper arm speed, it holds straight for a good portion of the flight before the Fade 3 brings it home left.

In headwinds: the 0 Turn means headwinds don't flip it the way they would a neutral or understable disc. The Sergeant cuts through headwinds and still finishes with its full fade. This is the primary reason most players add it to their bag.

Compared to the Firebird (9/3/0/4): the Sergeant is faster (11 vs 9) with more glide (4 vs 3) and slightly less fade (3 vs 4). The Firebird is more reliably overstable and better for short-range headwind shots and hard hyzer lines. The Sergeant adds distance to that overstable character for players who need more reach.

Compared to the Innova Wraith (11/5/-1/3): both are Speed 11, but the Wraith is slightly understable (-1 Turn) and the Sergeant is overstable (0 Turn). They fill opposite roles in the bag at the same speed class.

Dynamic Discs Sergeant Plastics Compared

  • Lucid: DD's premium translucent plastic. Durable, grippy, consistent flight. Best all-around choice. Around $17-20.
  • Fuzion: Grippy, slightly softer than Lucid. Good cold-weather performance.
  • Fuzion X: Stiffer than standard Fuzion. Most overstable Sergeant in the Fuzion family.
  • Prime: Base plastic. Affordable, softer, beats in faster.
  • Lucid Air: Lightweight Lucid. More understable due to lower mass - very different flight from standard Sergeant.

Pros

  • Reliable Fade 3 in headwind conditions at distance driver speed
  • Excellent forehand distance driver - overstability prevents flip
  • Speed 11 provides more distance than fairway-speed overstable discs
  • Wide Dynamic Discs plastic selection
  • Comfortable rim fits forehand and backhand grips

Cons

  • Too overstable for beginners to get good distance
  • Not a general-purpose driver - a specialist headwind/forehand tool
  • Lower glide (4) limits distance compared to neutral Speed 11 discs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sergeant the same as a fast Firebird?

Conceptually, yes. Both are overstable drivers with 0 Turn and high Fade designed for headwinds and forehand throws. The Firebird (9/3/0/4) is slower, has less glide, and fades harder. The Sergeant (11/4/0/3) is faster, has more glide, and fades slightly less. The Sergeant covers more distance when you need headwind resistance at speed; the Firebird is more controllable and reliably overstable for shorter technical shots.

When should I throw the Sergeant instead of the Wraith?

Reach for the Sergeant when you need the disc to fight the wind and finish hard left at distance driver speeds. Reach for the Wraith when you want maximum distance with a predictable fade and the conditions are calm or have a tailwind. The Sergeant and Wraith are the overstable/understable pair at Speed 11 - together they cover headwind and tailwind distance driving at that speed class.

Is the Sergeant good for forehand drives?

Yes, it is one of the best forehand distance discs available. The 0 Turn prevents the flip that plagues forehand throws with understable discs, and the Speed 11 rating means it covers real distance on forehand throws. Advanced forehand throwers who have outgrown the Firebird's Speed 9 for distance shots find the Sergeant a natural next step.
